Ehrenstein illusion, square in circles

Ehrensteins illusion - a square in concentric circles. This is one of a number of illusions studied by Walter Ehrenstein. The sides of a square placed inside concentric circles appear to curve inwards when in fact they are straight. This is due to the apparent perspective created by the concentric circles. The brain interprets this picture as having depth and alters its perception of the red square accordingly

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the fascinating Ehrenstein illusion, a visual trick that challenges our perception of shapes and depth. In this particular illusion, a square is placed within concentric circles, creating an ambiguous and illusory effect. Although the sides of the square are perfectly straight, they appear to curve inwards due to the apparent perspective created by the circular patterns. Studied by Walter Ehrenstein, this optical phenomenon demonstrates how our brain interprets visual stimuli based on context and cues. The concentric circles create an intriguing sense of depth, leading our minds to alter their perception of the red square accordingly. It is truly remarkable how our vision can be manipulated by such simple yet powerful tricks. This image not only highlights the beauty of geometric patterns but also serves as a reminder of how easily our senses can deceive us. It offers a glimpse into the intricate relationship between psychology and neuroscience when it comes to understanding human perception. Displayed with precision and clarity by Science Photo Library, this print invites viewers to explore their own perceptual biases while appreciating the artistry behind illusions like these. Whether you're fascinated by visual trickery or intrigued by scientific discoveries in vision research, this image will undoubtedly leave you pondering over its mesmerizing effects for hours on end.
