Claude de Jouffroy, French engineer

Claude-Francois-Dorothee de Jouffroy (1751-1832), French engineer. This statue was inaugurated on 17 August 1884, in Besancon, France. The sculptor, Charles Gautier (1831-1891), has shown Jouffroy with a model of the steamboat that he had proposed and built in the 1770s and 1780s. Jouffroys boats included the Palmipede and the Pyroscaphe. The latter was a paddle steamer that was demonstrated on the Saone river on 15 July 1783. Commercially successful steamers would not be developed for another 20 years. Artwork from the first volume (first period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a statue of Claude de Jouffroy, the renowned French engineer who made significant contributions to maritime engineering in the late 18th century. Created by sculptor Charles Gautier, this magnificent memorial was unveiled on August 17,1884, in Besancon, France. In the image, Jouffroy is depicted holding a model of his groundbreaking steamboat that he conceptualized and constructed during the 1770s and 1780s. His notable vessels included the Palmipede and the Pyroscaphe, with the latter being a paddle steamer that astounded spectators when it was demonstrated on July 15,1783, along the Saone river. It's worth noting that commercially successful steamers would not emerge until two decades later. This monochrome artwork from La Science Illustree's first volume (published in 1888) beautifully captures both historical significance and artistic brilliance. The statue immortalizes Jouffroy as an inventor whose pioneering work revolutionized transportation technology. As we admire this sculpture today, we are reminded of Jouffroy's ingenuity and his crucial role in shaping naval engineering history. This print serves as a testament to human innovation and celebrates one man's dedication to pushing technological boundaries.
