Bicycle gears

Bicycle gear mechanism. The peddle and chain wheel (top right corner) are turned by the rider. This turning force is transferred to the rear wheel by a toothed chain (running centre right to bottom left). The chain runs through the cogged gears (freewheel, centre left) and turns the back wheel, propelling the bicycle forward. The gears have different ratios that can change one revolution of the chain wheel into less than, more than or exactly one revolution of the rear wheel. The gears are changed by means of a derailleur (lower left) which moves the chain between gears

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of bicycle gears, revealing the inner workings of this beloved mode of transportation. Positioned in the top right corner, we see the peddle and chain wheel that are turned by the rider's force. As this force is transferred through a toothed chain running diagonally from centre right to bottom left, it engages with cogged gears located at the center left - known as freewheels - ultimately propelling the rear wheel forward. What makes these gears truly fascinating is their ability to transform one revolution of the chain wheel into less than, more than, or exactly one revolution of the rear wheel. This ratio-changing feature allows cyclists to adapt their speed and power output according to various terrains and riding conditions. To facilitate gear changes seamlessly, a derailleur mechanism can be found in the lower left portion of this image. The derailleur efficiently moves the chain between different gears with precision and ease. Through its depiction of these essential components, this print not only celebrates technology but also highlights eco-friendly travel options like cycling. It serves as a reminder that bicycles are much more than familiar objects; they embody sustainable mobility solutions for individuals seeking greener alternatives in their daily lives.
