Astronomy & the optical spectrum

Astronomy and the optical spectrum. The optical range of the electromagnetic spectrum runs from wavelengths of 310 millionths of a metre (nano- metre, nm) to 1100 nanometres. The human eye sees wavelengths of 390 to 700 nm as colours ranging from violet to red. Interstellar gas produces bright emission lines at wavelengths unique to the elements in that gas, the most prominent coming from neon (Ne), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O) & sulphur (S). Optical telescopes are placed on mountains or in space to avoid most of the blurring of light caused by the atmosphere. Optical sources include stars, galaxies (from top left to top right) and gaseous nebulae (at upper centre)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Astronomy & the optical spectrum" beautifully captures the wonders of our universe. The image showcases the vastness of space and highlights the importance of the optical spectrum in understanding celestial objects. The optical range of the electromagnetic spectrum, depicted here, spans from 310 millionths of a meter to 1100 nanometers. Our eyes perceive wavelengths between 390 and 700 nm as vibrant colors ranging from violet to red. However, this photo reveals that there is much more to discover beyond what our limited vision can comprehend. Interstellar gas plays a crucial role in astronomy as it emits bright lines at specific wavelengths unique to its elemental composition. Neon (Ne), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), and sulphur (S) are among the elements producing these distinctive emission lines. To overcome atmospheric blurring, astronomers strategically position optical telescopes on mountains or even launch them into space. This allows for clearer observations and sharper images of stars, galaxies, and gaseous nebulae - all visible in this remarkable artwork. As we delve deeper into understanding our cosmos through astronomical research and advanced detectors, such as those used in this photograph's creation by Science Photo Library, we continue unraveling mysteries that have fascinated humanity for centuries. Let this mesmerizing print serve as a reminder of how far we've come in exploring the wonders hidden within our vast universe.
