Ant compound eye, SEM C018 / 0552

Ant compound eye, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The units in a compound eye, the ommatidia, each contain a cornea and photoreceptor cells. Each ommatidium is capped by a cuticular biconvex lens, and it is the cumulative effect of these that produces the vision of a compound eye. A compound eye is not very good at distinguishing detail, but it does enable the detection of tiny movements. This is one of the compound eyes of a garden ant. Magnification: x350 when printed at 10 centimetres across

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of an ant's compound eye, captured through a colored scanning electron microscope (SEM). The compound eye is composed of numerous units called ommatidia, each consisting of a cornea and photoreceptor cells. Atop every ommatidium rests a cuticular biconvex lens, collectively responsible for the compound eye's vision. While this type of eye may not excel at discerning fine details, it possesses an extraordinary ability to detect even the slightest movements. The featured image unveils one such compound eye belonging to a garden ant. When printed at 10 centimeters across with a magnification level of x350, its mesmerizing complexity becomes evident. This photograph offers us insight into the optical marvels found in nature and invites contemplation on animal anatomy and sensory systems. With its vibrant colors and microscopic perspective, this SEM print serves as a testament to the wonders hidden within our natural world. It sparks curiosity about entomology, zoology, biology, and arthropods while highlighting the unique characteristics that enable ants to navigate their surroundings effectively. Louise Hughes from Science Photo Library has skillfully captured this remarkable sight—a reminder that there is much more than meets the human eye when observing wildlife up close.
