EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the picturesque Coverack harbour in St Keverne, Cornwall, during the year 1908. With its stunning composition and remarkable clarity, it offers a glimpse into the Edwardian era of this charming Cornish fishing village. The lower part of the village is beautifully showcased, revealing quaint cottages nestled amidst lush greenery. The focal point of this snapshot is undoubtedly the bustling harbour itself. Its tranquil waters glisten under the warm sunlight, reflecting an array of colorful fishing boats that dot its surface. Standing proudly at one end is the Life Boat Station, a symbol of safety and protection for seafarers navigating these treacherous coastal waters. The slipway leading down to the water's edge can be clearly seen, serving as a gateway between land and sea. Photographer Herbert Hughes has skillfully captured not only a moment frozen in time but also an essence that defines this close-knit community. This image evokes feelings of nostalgia and serenity while showcasing Cornwall's rich maritime heritage. As we gaze upon this historical gem from Royal Cornwall Museum's collection, we are transported back to an era when life was simpler yet filled with hard work and resilience. It serves as a reminder of how our ancestors relied on their natural surroundings for sustenance and livelihoods—a testament to their enduring spirit that continues to shape present-day Cornwall.
