EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the sleek lines and power of a Supermarine Scapa aircraft of 204 Squadron, Royal Air Force (RAF), as it soars over Alexandria harbour in 1936. The image, taken by acclaimed aviation photographer Charles E. Brown, offers a glimpse into the interwar period of the RAF's history, a time of innovation and expansion in military aviation. The Supermarine Scapa was a biplane torpedo bomber, designed and built by the Supermarine Aviation Works in Southampton, England. It was a formidable aircraft for its time, with a top speed of 155 miles per hour and a range of over 700 miles. The Scapa was armed with a single forward-firing machine gun and two flexible machine guns in the rear cockpit, as well as the ability to carry a torpedo or bombs. The photograph shows the Scapa in flight against the backdrop of Alexandria harbour, with the sun casting long shadows over the water. The aircraft's distinctive markings, including the bold red and white stripes of 204 Squadron, are clearly visible. The image exudes a sense of both grace and power, as the Scapa glides effortlessly through the air. The RAF's 204 Squadron was formed in 1913 and saw action in both World War I and World War II. During the interwar period, the squadron was based in Egypt and was tasked with protecting British interests in the Mediterranean. The Scapa was one of the squadron's primary aircraft during this time, and this photograph offers a fascinating insight into the daily life and operations of the RAF during the 1930s.
