Sylvia Pankhurst later gave an account of an incident when Mary was struck on the head by a pot-egg (a china dummy egg) and knocked unconscious. Youths were apparently paid by a wealthy Liberal supporter to hurl sweets at suffragette speakers (see Votes for Women 6th August 1909) Polling was held on11th Juneand the Conservative was duly elected. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Christabel Pankhurst and Mary Gawthorpe are seen standing boldly in the market place of Uppingham, Rutland, during the tumultuous 1907 by-election campaign. The suffragettes, pioneers of the women's suffrage movement in the United Kingdom, are holding a public meeting amidst the chaos and hostility of the local populace. Mary Gawthorpe, a committed suffragette and local activist, was a key figure in the campaign, but she faced intense opposition from supporters of the Liberal candidate, W.F Lyons. Sylvia Pankhurst, another prominent suffragette, later recounted an incident where Mary was brutally attacked with a pot-egg (a china dummy egg) by unruly youths, leaving her unconscious on the ground. The use of such violent tactics against the suffragettes was not uncommon during this period, as they fought for their right to vote. Polling for the by-election took place on the 11th of June, and despite the suffragettes' valiant efforts, the Conservative candidate was ultimately elected. This powerful image captures the determination and resilience of the suffragettes in the face of adversity, as they continued to fight for women's rights and suffrage, despite the physical and emotional challenges they faced. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave women in their quest for equality and the significant impact they had on the course of history.
