EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the iconic home of Thomas Jonathan Stonewall Jackson, one of the most celebrated American military figures of the 19th century. The Hermitage, located in Nashville, Tennessee, was the residence of Jackson and his family from 1853 until his untimely death in 1863. The classical Ionic columns and grand balcony of the home are a testament to the prosperity and refinement of the antebellum South. Built in 1824, The Hermitage was originally the plantation home of Andrew and Rachel Donelson. Jackson purchased the property in 1853, and it became the center of his domestic life as he rose through the ranks of the United States Army and eventually led the Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Jackson's military successes, including the Battle of First Manassas and the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, brought him great renown, and The Hermitage became a symbol of the Confederate cause. The lush garden and surrounding trees add to the serene beauty of the scene, offering a glimpse into the past and the life of a man who dedicated himself to his country and his family. The history of The Hermitage extends beyond the Civil War era, as it has been preserved as a museum and National Historic Site, allowing visitors to explore the rich history of this important American figure and his home.
