EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, depicts two fascinating marine species: the Snailfish, Cyclogasterus liparis, and the Clingfish, Lepadogaster lepadogaster. The illustration was created under the direction of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a renowned painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Snailfish, also known as the Hippolyte Snailfish, is a small, slender fish with a pinkish-orange body and distinctive, elongated dorsal fin. It is named for its resemblance to a land snail, with its slow, sinuous movements and ability to hide in crevices and under rocks. The Snailfish is found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans at depths of up to 2,000 meters. The Clingfish, also known as the Goosefish or Clinging Goosefish, is a small, flatfish with a triangular body and large, adhesive discs on its underside, which enable it to cling to rocks and other surfaces. Its coloration is mottled brown and green, providing excellent camouflage in its rocky environment. The Clingfish is found in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and is known for its ability to breathe air through its skin when exposed to the air during low tide. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving, illustrated by J.G. Pretre and engraved by Massard, provides a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating marine creatures, captured for posterity in the pages of Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles.
