EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 175" of Marcus Elieser Bloch's "Naturgeschichte der ausländischen Fische: mit sechs und dreissig Ausgemalten Kupfern nach Originalen" (Natural History of Foreign Fish: With Sixteen and Thirty Copperplates after Originals, 1785-95) features an exquisitely detailed illustration of the Sea-Pea-Cock, also known as the Dolphinfish or the Mahi-Mahi (Coryphaena plumieri). This magnificent bony fish belongs to the family Coryphaenidae, order Perciformes, and class Actinopterygii. Bloch's illustration captures the Sea-Pea-Cock's vibrant colors and unique features, with its elongated body adorned with iridescent scales that shimmer in various shades of green, blue, and purple. The fish's most striking feature is the series of bright, circular spots on its sides, resembling the eyes of other fish, which may serve as a camouflage against predators. The Sea-Pea-Cock is a highly migratory fish found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. It is a popular game fish, known for its impressive size and fighting ability. The fish can grow up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in length and weigh up to 20 kilograms (44 pounds). Bloch's illustration is a testament to the meticulous work of 19th-century naturalists and their dedication to documenting the natural world. The plate is part of a larger work that includes 33 copperplate engravings, each one showcasing a different species of foreign fish. The illustrations were produced based on original specimens and provide valuable insights into the morphology, anatomy, and taxonomy of various fish species. Today, Bloch's work remains an essential resource for marine biologists, fish enthusiasts, and historians, offering a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the ocean and the natural history of the past.
