EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, created by Karl Joseph Brodtmann in 1836 for Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals, showcases a stunning array of bats from various regions. The first bat depicted is the Western Naked-backed Fruit Bat, Dobsonia peronii, with its large wings and hairless back, making it a unique sight among other bat species. Next to it is the Long-tongued Nectar Bat, Macroglossus minimus, easily recognizable by its elongated tongue, which it uses to extract nectar from flowers. The Northern Ghost Bat, Diclidurus albus, is represented in the third spot, with its distinctive white fur and membranous wings. The fourth bat in this exquisite composition is the Geoffroy's Rousette, Rousettus amplexicaudatus. This species is known for its distinctive membrane that connects the hind limbs, creating a heart-shaped appearance when the bat is in flight. The Western Naked-backed Fruit Bat, Long-tongued Nectar Bat, Northern Ghost Bat, and Geoffroy's Rousette are just a few examples of the incredible diversity of bat species. These fascinating creatures play essential roles in their ecosystems, contributing to pollination and seed dispersal. Brodtmann's masterful illustration not only showcases the beauty and intricacy of these bats but also serves as a testament to the natural history artistry of the 19th century. This print is a must-have for any natural history or bat enthusiast's collection.
