EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a beautiful fusion of two iconic symbols of ancient Roman culture: a bireme warship and a boat adorned with a wolf and swan prow. The bireme, depicted in the background, is a type of Roman warship with two decks of oars. Each deck is manned by rowers, their determined faces focused on propelling the vessel forward. The rudder at the stern steers the ship, while pennants fly high on the masts. The boat in the foreground, on the other hand, is a symbol of the Roman founding myth. The prow is carved with the image of a wolf and a swan, representing the legendary story of Romulus and Remus. The wolf, the protector of Romulus, and the swan, the mother of Remus, are both depicted in intricate detail. The boat also features a cabin, ropes securing the sails, and a dolphin leaping gracefully in the water. This stunning image is a copperplate engraving by Pietro Ruga, created after an illustration by Lorenzo Rocceggiani from his 100 Plates of Costumes Religious, Civil and Military of the Ancient Egyptians, Etruscans, Greeks and Romans, published in Rome in 1802. The meticulous attention to detail and the rich historical significance of this image make it a must-have for any collection of ancient Roman art.
