EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image showcases a collection of relics associated with Thomas Becket, the renowned 12th-century Archbishop of Canterbury and martyr. At the center of the display lies an intricately carved ivory grace cup, believed to have been used by Becket himself during religious ceremonies. Two ancient mitres, one from Sens Abbey in Normandy (left) and another once belonging to Cardinal Manning (right), add a regal touch to the assemblage. The four lead tokens (bottom left) are remnants of a time when pilgrims would journey to Canterbury to pay homage to the revered saint. These tokens, worn as badges of devotion, served as tangible proof of their pilgrimage to Becket's shrine. The lead ampula (bottom right) is another relic from the pilgrimage era, used to contain holy water or relics, further connecting the faithful to their spiritual journey and the memory of Saint Thomas Becket. Thomas Becket, a prominent figure in medieval England, was martyred in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170 AD. His martyrdom and subsequent canonization sparked an outpouring of devotion and pilgrimage, making Canterbury a significant site of religious pilgrimage in Europe during the Middle Ages. These relics, each with their unique history, serve as a testament to the deep-rooted faith and devotion of the pilgrims who journeyed to Canterbury to honor the memory of this remarkable saint.
