EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured engraving depicts the elegant Purple Heron, Ardea purpurea, in its natural habitat. The Purple Heron is a large wading bird native to Europe, Asia, and Africa. With its long, slender legs and a height of up to 100 cm, it is an imposing figure in the wetlands it calls home. The intricate detail in this engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Edouard Travies, showcases the heron's vibrant purple hue, which is most prominent on its back and wings. Its long, sharp beak and piercing eyes are also clearly visible, revealing the bird's predatory nature. The Purple Heron is a skilled hunter, feeding primarily on fish, amphibians, and reptiles. It uses its long legs to wade through shallow water, standing motionless for long periods of time before striking with lightning speed to catch its prey. This beautiful illustration is taken from Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849. The Dictionnaire was a comprehensive work that aimed to document all known species of animals, and this engraving is a testament to the meticulous research and artistic skill of its creators.
