This evocative photograph captures the essence of the hop picking season in West Malling, Kent, England during the 1930s. The image shows a group of hop pickers, both adults and children, diligently working their way through the hop vines. The hop pickers are seen pulling the heavy, laden hop bines towards them, using long poles to support the weight of the vines and to keep them off the ground. The baskets at their feet are filled with the freshly picked hops, which will be carefully transported to the drying sheds for processing. Hop picking was a seasonal industry, with the peak season typically running from late July to early October. Families would travel from all over the country to work in the hop fields, making it an important source of income for many. The long hours and hard labor were rewarded with a sense of community and the opportunity to earn wages that were often higher than those available during the rest of the year. Despite the challenging conditions, the hop picking season was also a time of celebration and tradition.
