EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir James Ware (1594-1666): An Unknown 17th Century Oil Painting This exquisite oil painting depicts Sir James Ware, an Irishman who rose to prominence during the 17th century. Born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1594, Ware made significant contributions to the fields of history, antiquities, and literature. He is best known for his work "A Description of Ireland," a comprehensive account of Irish history, geography, and antiquities. The painting captures the intellectual and refined nature of Sir James Ware. He is depicted in formal attire, with a thoughtful expression on his face, suggesting deep contemplation. The artist has expertly rendered the intricacies of Ware's clothing, from the rich fabric of his doublet to the delicate lace at his collar. The background is simple, with a subtle landscape, perhaps alluding to Ware's deep connection to the Irish countryside. Sir James Ware's scholarly pursuits began in earnest when he was sent to study at Trinity College in Dublin. He later traveled extensively throughout Europe, where he continued his education and expanded his knowledge of ancient texts and artifacts. Upon his return to Ireland, he became a member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries and dedicated himself to documenting the history and antiquities of his native land. Ware's "A Description of Ireland" was published in 1633 and remains an invaluable resource for scholars today. It provides a detailed account of Irish history, from prehistoric times to the present day, and includes descriptions of Irish castles, monasteries, and other historical sites. Ware's work was groundbreaking in its time and helped to foster a renewed interest in Irish history and culture. This beautiful oil painting is a testament to Sir James Ware's intellectual prowess and his deep connection to his homeland. It serves as a reminder of the important role he played in documenting and preserving the history and heritage of Ireland.
