Mounted Prints from Mary Evans Picture Library
LCC-LFB fatal warehouse fire, Langley Street WC2
Three firemen died fighting this blaze in a Covent Garden warehouse in Langley Street. The first crews to arrive, from Clerkenwell fire station, found the warehouse well alight. The building was heavily smoke-logged. As the crews entered the building the roof collapsed with fatal consequences. Station Officer Hawkins and fireman Batt-Rawden were both killed by the fall of debris. Fireman Gadd died later as a result of his injuries. Shown here are crews continuing to extinguish the fire within the shell of the collapsed warehouse

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph from the London Fire Brigade's archives, taken in 1954, we see firefighters bravely continuing their efforts to extinguish the remnants of a devastating warehouse fire in Covent Garden's Langley Street, despite the tragic loss of three of their own. The building, located in the heart of the bustling WC2 district, was already well alight when the first crews from Clerkenwell Fire Station arrived on the scene. The warehouse was heavily smoke-logged, and as the firefighters entered the building, the roof collapsed, resulting in the fatalities of Station Officer Hawkins, Fireman Batt-Rawden, and Fireman Gadd. The photograph captures the intensity of the blaze, with flames and smoke billowing from the wreckage, as well as the determination of the remaining firefighters, who are seen using jets of water to douse the remaining embers. The image is a poignant reminder of the risks that firefighters take every day to keep our communities safe, and the sacrifices they and their families make in the line of duty. The photograph is part of the extensive collection of historical fire service images held by the London Fire Brigade at Mary Evans Picture Library.
