EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene at a European hunting camp on the edge of the territory of the Kachichi people in Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, circa 1910. The Belgian Congo was still in colonial rule at this time. The hunters, dressed in safari gear, have successfully hunted a zebra, which lies dead on the ground. The camp, with its tents and equipment, is set up in the African savannah, surrounded by the vast expanse of the African wilderness. The hunters, with their rifles slung over their shoulders, pose proudly for the camera, having accomplished their goal of bagging a big game animal. The Congolese people, who lived in the area, are not present in the photograph, but their presence is felt through the evidence of their territory and the colonial context of the scene. The hunters' intrusion into this land, and the taking of a life, underscores the complex and often contentious relationship between European colonizers and the indigenous peoples of Africa during this period. This image provides a glimpse into the past, offering a window into a time when European hunters came to Africa to seek adventure and to assert their dominance over the land and its wildlife.
