EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures an historic moment in the construction of St. Paul's Cathedral in London, as the new Great Bell is maneuvered into place in December 1882. The image on the left shows the impressive new bell, which had been imported from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, being carefully positioned on a wooden slipway. The cathedral, depicted on the right, stands proudly in the background, its iconic dome reaching towards the heavens. The maneuvering of the Great Bell was a significant event in the cathedral's history. The old bell, which had cracked during testing in 1858, had been in use since 1700 and was no longer fit for purpose. The new bell, weighing in at 16 tons, was a crucial addition to the cathedral's bells, which were used to call the faithful to prayer and to mark important events in the city. The wooden slipway, constructed specifically for this purpose, allowed the bell to be maneuvered into the cathedral without causing damage to the delicate stonework. The engraving shows a team of workers carefully guiding the bell into position, using ropes and pulleys to control its movement. The intricate details of the scene, from the individual workers to the intricate patterns on the cathedral's exterior, are beautifully rendered in this historical image. The successful installation of the new Great Bell marked the completion of a major phase in the restoration of St. Paul's Cathedral, which had been undergoing extensive renovations following damage sustained during a bombing raid in 1831. This engraving is a testament to the skill and dedication of the craftsmen and workers involved in the project, and serves as a reminder of the rich history and enduring significance of St. Paul's Cathedral in London.
