EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases two fascinating insects: the European grain moth (Nemapogon granella) and the common bed bug (Cimex lectularius). The European grain moth, depicted in magnified form in parts e, f, and larva a and b, is a small moth with a wingspan of around 15-20mm. Its larvae, as shown here, are characterized by their distinctive white, waxy tufts and a brown head. The European grain moth is native to Europe and is a significant pest of stored grain and other dried food products. The common bed bug, shown magnified in part g, is a small, flat, brown insect measuring around 4-5mm long. It is an ectoparasitic insect that feeds on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals. The common bed bug is a nocturnal creature and is often found in mattresses, bed frames, and other areas where humans sleep. The meticulous detail and vibrant colors in this engraving serve to highlight the unique features of these insects, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the late 18th century. The inclusion of these insects in a children's picture book reflects a growing interest in entomology during this time period, as well as an increasing awareness of the natural world and its inhabitants.
