EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases two winter blooming plants: the Christmas Rose, Helleborus niger, and Henbane, Hyoscyamus niger. The Christmas Rose, with its elegant white petals and dark green leaves, is a traditional symbol of the winter solstice and the hope of renewal. It was believed that the plant could bloom even on Christmas Day, hence the name. The Henbane, on the other hand, is a poisonous plant with large, bell-shaped, hooded flowers that come in various shades of white, pink, and purple. Historically, Henbane was used for medicinal purposes, particularly for pain relief and as a sedative. However, its toxicity made it a dangerous substance if not handled properly. The intricate details of the engraving, with the delicate petals of the Christmas Rose and the sinuous curves of the Henbane, are a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the time. This beautiful illustration invites us to appreciate the wonders of nature, even during the coldest months of the year, and to remember that even in darkness, beauty can still be found.
