This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Frederic Cuvier's "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie," depicts two striking birds native to various regions of the Old World. The image on the left represents the Channel-billed Cuckoo (Scythrops novaehollandiae, also known as the Channel-billed Cuckoo or the Eulabeia), a large cuckoo species with a distinctive, elongated, curved bill. The bird is shown perched on a branch, its plumage displaying a mix of black, white, and gray feathers, with a prominent white stripe above its eye. On the right, we find the Chestnut-breasted Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus curvirostris, also known as the Crested Malkoha or the Crested Honeybuzzard), a medium-sized bird of prey with a distinctive crest on its head and a long, curved bill. The bird is depicted in a hunting pose, with its wings spread wide, ready to swoop down on its prey. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was executed by Guyard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault in Paris between 1816 and 1830. This magnificent work of art is a testament to the intricate detail and beauty that characterized the natural history illustrations of the time. The meticulous technique of stipple engraving, which involves the application of tiny dots to create shading and depth, adds to the lifelike quality of the image. Today, this print serves as a reminder of the rich history of ornithology and the dedication of the artists and scientists who documented the natural world for future generations.
