Engraving of a race held by the Surrey Bicycle Club at the Oval, Kennington, London, September 1888. As can be easily seen, the race was held using Penny Farthing bicycles. These were the most popular bicycles until the mid 1890s when use of the modern, safety bicycles became widespread
