EDITORS COMMENTS
Aphrodite, also known as Hera Borghese, is a breathtaking Roman marble copy of a Greek bronze statue from the Classical Period, currently housed at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark. Dating back to the 2nd century AD, this exquisite sculpture showcases the goddess of Love in all her divine beauty. The statue, which stands at a height of approximately 1.6 meters, depicts Aphrodite reclining on a rocky outcrop, or Monte Calvo, with one hand resting on her breast, while the other hand supports her head. The goddess's voluptuous body is adorned with intricate details, from the delicate curves of her figure to the intricate folds of her drapery. Her serene expression and sensuous pose evoke a sense of tranquility and grace. The original Greek statue from which this Roman copy was made is believed to have been created around 300 BC, and it is thought to have been inspired by the famous Cnidian Aphrodite by Praxiteles. This iconic image of Aphrodite became a popular subject for Roman sculptors, who often created marble copies of the original Greek works. Aphrodite, or Venus as she is also known, was one of the most revered deities in Greek and Roman mythology. She was the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, and was often depicted as a seductive and alluring figure. This stunning marble copy of Hera Borghese is a testament to the enduring power of ancient art and the continued fascination with the mythological world of gods and goddesses.
