EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a half-length portrait study of a woman wearing an elegant cap and adorned with pearl earrings. Created between 1740-1760, this artwork was meticulously crafted using black and white chalks, brown ink, graphite, and blue laid paper. The squared sheet measures approximately 12 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches (324 x 261 cm), offering a detailed glimpse into the artist's skillful execution. Attributed to the circle of Joseph van Aken, a renowned Flemish painter from Antwerp who later became active in Britain during the mid-18th century. Van Aken specialized in painting draperies and collaborated with leading portraitists such as Joseph Highmore, Thomas Hudson, and Allan Ramsay. In this particular piece, he masterfully captures the sitter's face while relying on his exceptional technique to finish the rest of her figure. The young woman depicted exudes grace and poise through her delicate features and stylish attire. This exquisite portrait serves as a testament to both the talent of its creator and the fashion trends prevalent during that era.
