February sign Pisces inscription states subject
February with the sign of Pisces, As the inscription below states, the subject of this painting is the month of February. The sign of the zodiac sign Pisces is depicted on a relief with a black background. The boat may have been derived from the Le Douze Mois Grotesques carpet series designed by Claude III Audran (1658-1734) around 1709, which was printed by Jean Audran (1667-1756). A similar boat can be seen on the print with the first two months in February. Instead of Neptunes, the god of protection of February, the painting shows the sea god Okeanos. He can be recognized by his long beard and horns and is surrounded by snakes and fish as usual. Jan Kamphuijsen, 1791, panel, oil paint (paint), h 332 cm × w 30.4 cm × d 3.2 cm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the essence of February, with its prominent zodiac sign Pisces depicted on a relief against a striking black background. The subject of this exquisite painting is none other than the month itself. The inspiration for the boat in this artwork may have been drawn from Claude III Audran's renowned Le Douze Mois Grotesques carpet series, created around 1709 and printed by Jean Audran. A similar boat can be observed in another print featuring the first two months of February. Intriguingly, instead of Neptune, traditionally associated with safeguarding February, we see Okeanos, the sea god himself. His presence is unmistakable with his long beard and distinctive horns. As customary, he is surrounded by an array of snakes and fish. Jan Kamphuijsen skillfully captures these elements on panel using oil paint as his medium. The dimensions of this remarkable piece measure approximately 332 cm in height, 30.4 cm in width, and 3.2 cm in depth. This extraordinary print from Liszt Collection offers viewers a glimpse into the artistic interpretation of February's astrological significance through intricate details and symbolism that truly bring it to life.
