This vibrant print captures the bustling atmosphere of an East Indian market stall in Batavia. Managed by a group of Indian women, the stall is filled with a colorful array of indigenous fruits including ramboutan, mangistan, dourian, copra, mangas, grapefruit, pineapple and bananas. A Chinese man can be seen purchasing some fruit from one of the women. Adding to the lively scene is a white cockatoo perched on the bamboo fence. Its presence adds a touch of exoticism to this already captivating display. In the bottom right corner of the image, there is a painted paper listing all the names of these delicious fruits as well as other elements present in this busy marketplace such as stalls and ornamental birds. The photograph itself is based on an original artwork attributed to Albert Eckhout dating back to 1640-1666. The use of canvas and oil paint brings out every intricate detail and color in this composition.
