BOURNEMOUTH CENTRAL STATION, BOURNEMOUTH, DORSET. A family walking beside a train at Platform 3 of Bournemouth Central Station, either arriving or departing for a day trip to Bournemouth for Laing staff and families.
In 1947, after a seven year break, Laing had resurrected their Area Outings for staff and their families, with trips taking place in May and June. In contrast to earlier years, in 1956 there were more outings, each with smaller group sizes " in a bid to recapture the intimate atmosphere" of earlier day trips. Twelve outings were arranged to take place in the early summer of 1956, with 2, 000 people attending four outings travelling from London. This outing was for London employees and their families from the Administration and Secretarial Divisions, and from Coryton, Dagenham, Shell Haven, and Thames Haven. John Laing, chairman of John Laing and Son Ltd, and his wife also attended this outing

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time at Bournemouth Central Station in Dorset. The year is 1956, and a family can be seen walking beside a train on Platform 3. It is unclear whether they are arriving or departing for a day trip to the beautiful coastal town of Bournemouth. The image holds historical significance as it represents the revival of Laing's Area Outings for their staff and families after a seven-year hiatus. In an attempt to recreate the intimate atmosphere of earlier day trips, smaller group sizes were organized for more outings in 1956. This particular outing was arranged for London employees from various divisions, including Administration and Secretarial, as well as those from Coryton, Dagenham, Shell Haven, and Thames Haven. Notably present at this event were John Laing himself, chairman of John Laing and Son Ltd. , along with his wife. Their attendance further emphasizes the importance placed on these outings by the company. The photograph exudes nostalgia for simpler times when rail transport was a popular mode of travel and leisure activities like day trips held great appeal. It serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of Laing's commitment to fostering camaraderie among its employees and their families. This remarkable snapshot into history has been preserved by A© Historic England Archive - an invaluable glimpse into mid-20th century Britain that continues to captivate viewers today.
