EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to a momentous day in history, capturing the awe-inspiring sight of Shadbolts balloon Reliance taking flight from the picturesque grounds of Alexandra Palace. The hand-coloured lantern slide beautifully depicts the grandeur and excitement surrounding this significant event. As we gaze upon this image, our eyes are drawn to the large crowds that have gathered to witness this remarkable spectacle. Their faces filled with anticipation and wonder, they eagerly await the ascent of not only Reliance but also another balloon preparing for launch nearby. It was on May 29th, 1882 when Cecil Victor Shadbolt embarked on his groundbreaking journey aboard Reliance. Little did he know that he would go down in history as one of the pioneers who took their first aerial photographs during this very expedition. This photograph may serve as a precious record of that historic occasion. Transporting us back to an era long gone, this Victorian-era snapshot encapsulates both the marvels of early aviation and the spirit of adventure that defined it. It reminds us how far we have come since those pioneering days while paying homage to those who dared to dream big and reach for the skies. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this print is a testament to human ingenuity and serves as a timeless reminder of our endless quest for exploration and discovery.
