EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the enigmatic Stanton Drew Circles and Cove come into view, nestled within the verdant rolling hills of Bath & NE Somerset. The site, a designated Scheduled Monument and protected by Historic England, is a testament to the rich prehistoric heritage of the region. The image reveals a panoramic view of the circular formations, with the colossal Stanton Drew Stone Circle taking center stage. This monument, consisting of 27 massive stones, each standing approximately 3 meters high, is one of the most significant prehistoric sites in Britain. The circle, believed to have been constructed around 3000 BC, is surrounded by a tranquil pasture, dotted with trees, which adds to its mystical allure. Beyond the Stone Circle lies the smaller, yet equally intriguing Sweet Well Circles, a collection of three concentric circles, which date back to around 3600 BC. The site also features a picturesque cove, which is thought to have been used for rituals and ceremonies during prehistoric times. The landscape surrounding Stanton Drew Circles and Cove is characterized by its rural beauty, with trees adorning the horizon and the undulating hills providing a serene backdrop. The site is a popular destination for visitors seeking to explore the mysteries of the past and connect with the rich history of Britain's prehistoric heritage. This photograph, captured by the Historic England Photo Library, offers a glimpse into the awe-inspiring beauty and historical significance of Stanton Drew Circles and Cove, a place where the past and present converge in a breathtaking display of natural wonder and human ingenuity.
