The Torpedoing of the Channel Steamer Sussex, First World War, March 1916
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This haunting print captures the devastating aftermath of the torpedo attack on the passenger ferry SS Sussex during World War I. Taken in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, it vividly illustrates how the explosion ripped through the vessel's bows, leaving a scene of destruction and despair. On that fateful day of March 24th, 1916, as tensions ran high in the English Channel between Folkestone and Dieppe, a German U-boat unleashed its deadly weapon upon unsuspecting passengers. The SS Sussex was left severely damaged by this act of war, with numerous lives tragically lost. Reports vary on the exact number of casualties; some sources claim at least 50 deaths while others suggest figures as high as 80 to 100. The image serves as a stark reminder of the horrors endured during this global conflict. It is an indelible testament to both human resilience and vulnerability in times of war. As we gaze upon this historical artifact from Frank A Mumby's "The Great World War: A History". Volume V (c1920), let us remember those who perished aboard this ill-fated ship and honor their memory. This photograph not only documents an event but also symbolizes countless similar tragedies that occurred throughout World War I. It stands as a poignant reminder that behind every statistic lies individual stories filled with bravery and sacrifice. May we never forget their sacrifices as we strive for peace in our world today.
