Prince Rupert, c1665, (1944) - A Glimpse into the Royalist Commander's Legacy
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print transports us back to the 17th century, offering a rare glimpse of Prince Rupert, an influential figure during the English Civil War. The portrait showcases his commanding presence as he dons the distinguished robes of a Knight of the Garter. Prince Rupert, also known as the 1st Duke of Cumberland and Count Palatine of the Rhine, played a pivotal role in shaping British history. As a cavalry officer and later commander-in-chief of Royalist land forces, he fought valiantly for his cause against Parliamentarians. The image is based on an original painting by Peter Lely housed at London's National Maritime Museum. The unknown creator skillfully captured every intricate detail - from Prince Rupert's lustrous hair to his regal military attire made with silk and lace. This print not only serves as a visual testament to Prince Rupert's significance but also offers insight into 17th-century fashion and social history. It symbolizes an era marked by political turmoil and conflict that shaped modern Britain. Preserved through time thanks to C. V. Wedgwood's book "Battlefields in Britain" this piece allows us to appreciate both its historical value and artistic merit. Let it serve as a reminder of those who have left their mark on our world while igniting curiosity about their stories yet untold.
