EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical artifact that holds immense significance in the annals of English history. Titled "Letter to the Lord Mayor of London, 17th December 1653" this artwork was created by Edward Montagu, the 2nd Earl of Manchester. The letter itself is an extraordinary piece of correspondence written from Whitehall to the Lord Mayor of London during a tumultuous period in England's past. Dated just two days before one of the most pivotal moments in Oliver Cromwell's rise to power, this letter requests the presence and assistance of the Lord Mayor and Alderman at Cromwell's proclamation as Lord Protector on Monday, 19th December. Signed by influential figures such as Jon Disbrowe, Phillip Sidney, John Lambert, and others who played crucial roles in shaping England's destiny during this era. The photograph captures not only their signatures but also reveals intricate details like color variations and handwriting styles that add depth to its historical value. It transports us back to a time when war ravaged England during the English Civil War (1642-1648), highlighting how political power shifted hands amidst chaos. Edward Montagu himself was an important figure within Parliamentarian circles and his involvement adds further weight to this document. This print serves as a testament to both Montagu's artistic skill as well as his role in documenting significant events through his creations. Overall, this print offers viewers a glimpse into an era marked by conflict and transformation while immortalizing key players like Oliver Cromwell through artistry combined with historical authenticity.
