Hood Memorial Relief - "The Dream of Eugene Aram", 1854. Detail on monument commemorating poet Thomas Hood in Kensal Green Cemetery, London. Medallion illustrating...Hood's fine poem...there is a terrible moral conveyed: the observer is made to feel, by the whole character and bearing of the principal figure, that "Woe, woe, unutterable woe", is the sure fate of those who spill "life's sacred stream". The haggard countenance and the shuddering aspect of Eugene Aram powerfully portray the dread workings of a guilty conscience: "The crimson clouds before his eyes, The flames about his brain; For blood has left upon his soul, Its everlasting stain". In striking contrast to the mental agony depicted in this figure, are the studious boy lying near, and the happy children released from school playing in the distance'. The Dream of Eugene Aram
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating and thought-provoking image from the Hood Memorial Relief, created in 1854 and located in Kensal Green Cemetery in London. The creator of this masterpiece remains unknown, adding an air of mystery to the artwork. This intriguing medallion commemorates the life and work of Thomas Hood, a renowned English poet. The central figure in the image is Eugene Aram, the protagonist of Hood's famous poem "The Dream," which carries a profound and haunting moral message. Aram's haggard countenance and shuddering aspect powerfully convey the guilt and anguish of a soul stained by the spilling of "life's sacred stream." The crimson clouds before his eyes and the flames about his brain are stark reminders of the terrible consequences of taking an innocent life. In stark contrast to the mental torment depicted in Aram, the medallion also features a studious boy lying nearby and happy children released from school, playing in the distance. This juxtaposition effectively highlights the innocence and purity that exists in contrast to the darkness and despair of Aram's conscience. First published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, this image has captivated audiences for over a century and continues to evoke feelings of empathy, guilt, and introspection. The Dream of Eugene Aram serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of our actions and the importance of living a moral and ethical life.
