EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Hatshepsut, an influential figure in ancient Egyptian history. Created by artist Winifred Mabel Brunton in 1926, this portrait beautifully captures the essence of the queen who reigned during the 15th century BC. Hatshepsut, daughter of Thutmose I and wife of Thutmose II, holds a significant place as Egypt's first female pharaoh. In her reign from 1479 BC, she defied traditional gender roles by assuming the title of Pharaoh and even donning a false beard to assert her authority. This bold move did not hinder her success; instead, it marked a period of growth and prosperity for Egypt. The image portrays Hatshepsut with regal elegance. Her royal dress is adorned with intricate jewelry and a striking headdress that symbolizes her power and status. The attention to detail in this portrait highlights both Brunton's artistic talent and Hatshepsut's significance as a ruler. Through this print, we are transported back to ancient Egypt—a time when monarchy ruled supreme—and given a glimpse into one woman's extraordinary journey towards greatness. As we admire Hatshepsut's confident expression and majestic presence captured on paper almost a century ago, we cannot help but be inspired by her courage and determination to break barriers in pursuit of progress for her country.
