The Baltic Flying Squadron of 1856: Falcon, Harrier, Samson, Imperieuse, Arrogant, Euryalus, Amphion Creator: Unknown

The Baltic Flying Squadron of 1856: Falcon, Harrier, Samson, Imperieuse, Arrogant, Euryalus, Amphion, Driver, Pylades, 1856. Crimean War: warships of the Royal Navy. The campaign of this year in the Baltic [Sea] has already commenced, the ice having left much earlier than on previous occasions; and the vessels of the advanced or Flying Squadron have again entered the seas the ports of which they so successfully blockaded last year...The present destination of the Flying Squadron is Kiel, from which place the vessels will receive orders for their future movements - the armistice not interfering in any way with the blockade'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, created in 1856, showcases the Baltic Flying Squadron of the Royal Navy during the Crimean War. The squadron, consisting of the vessels Falcon, Harrier, Samson, Imperieuse, Arrogant, Euryalus, Amphion, Driver, Pylades, is depicted anchored in a serene Baltic Sea. The early melting of the ice in the Baltic Sea enabled the squadron to resume its blockade duties, as reported in the "Illustrated London News" of the time. The Flying Squadron, an advanced force of the Royal Navy, had successfully blockaded Baltic ports during the previous year, and their presence was crucial in maintaining the naval supremacy of Britain during the Crimean War. The squadron's mission was to receive orders from Kiel, and the armistice did not hinder their blockade activities. The image captures the essence of 19th-century naval warfare, with the sailing ships anchored in the water, their sails furled, and their cannons ready for action. The print provides a unique glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the history of naval warfare and the role of the Royal Navy in maintaining peace and security during a time of conflict. The photograph print, although its creator remains unknown, is an essential addition to any collection of historical maritime art or naval history. It serves as a testament to the technological advancements, strategic importance, and the sheer might of the naval forces of the time.
