EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph titled "As the twig is bent so is the tree inclined" we are transported to a bygone era, where generations intertwine in a moment of profound connection. The image showcases an elderly man, clad in a humble smock and leaning on his trusty cane, as he takes a leisurely stroll with his young granddaughter. The scene exudes tranquility and tenderness as they walk side by side, their hands clasped together in harmony. It is evident that this grandfather holds great wisdom and love within him, for he imparts not only physical support but also spiritual guidance to the little girl beside him. With heads bowed reverently, both figures engage in prayer - an act that transcends time and age. The child looks up at her elder with admiration and curiosity while learning from his example of faithfulness. As the saying goes, "as the twig is bent so is the tree inclined" suggesting that early influences shape one's character throughout life. This poignant snapshot serves as a reminder of the power of intergenerational relationships and how they mold us into who we become. It encapsulates timeless values such as respect, devotion, and passing down cherished traditions from one generation to another. Captured beautifully by James Hayllar over a century ago, this print evokes nostalgia while inspiring us to reflect on our own familial connections and legacies left behind for future generations.
