Captain Robert Maunsell capturing French gunboats off Java, July 1811, c.1811 (oil on canvas)

7342721 Captain Robert Maunsell capturing French gunboats off Java, July 1811, c.1811 (oil on canvas) by Huggins, William John (1781-1845); 71x106.5 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: William John Huggins
A view from the sea showing a boat action off the coast of Java. On 31 July 1811 the British Captain Maunsell commanding the sloop the Procris, discovered a convoy of 40 or 50 proas, or local canoes, escorted by six French gunboats in the mouth of the Indromayo river in Java. When he closed to within a gunshot in shallow water, he found that his fire made little impression on the gunboats. So instead he launched his boats and two flatboats, filled with seamen and 40 men of the 14th and 89th regiments. They were able to board and capture five of the French gunboats in quick succession; the sixth blew up. Meanwhile, however, the convoy escaped up the shallow muddy river. In the distance is the Javanese coastline and in the foreground are the British boats rowing the sailors and soldiers towards the Javanese proas and French ships. The painting is signed W. EDITORS COMMENTS
The painting captures the intense moment when Captain Robert Maunsell bravely led his men in capturing French gunboats off the coast of Java in July 1811. The scene shows the British sloop 'Procris' closing in on a convoy of proas escorted by six enemy gunboats at the mouth of the Indromayo river. Despite initial difficulties with their firepower, Captain Maunsell made a bold decision to launch boats filled with seamen and soldiers to board and capture five of the French vessels, while one exploded in defeat. In the background, we see the rugged Javanese coastline looming as a backdrop to this daring naval battle. The artist William John Huggins skillfully portrays the tension and action of this historic event, with British boats rowing towards their targets amidst swirling waters and billowing smoke. This painting serves as a testament to Captain Maunsell's leadership and courage in facing overwhelming odds to secure victory for his crew and country. It is a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice exhibited by those who fought for freedom on distant shores during times of conflict.
