In this lithograph by Achille Beltrame, we witness a dramatic moment in the life of a Serbian student during her mountain expedition. As she traverses the snowy landscape on skis, she suddenly becomes aware of the presence of a pack of wolves nearby. Realizing the danger that lurks beneath, she swiftly abandons her equipment and climbs up a sturdy tree in an attempt to evade their pursuit. To her dismay, instead of dispersing, the cunning wolves gather under the tree and lay siege throughout the night. The young woman finds herself trapped high above ground as they patiently wait for an opportunity to strike. It is only with great relief that dawn breaks and allows her release from this terrifying ordeal. Beltrame's illustration vividly captures both the fear and resilience displayed by this brave student amidst nature's harsh elements. The snow-covered branches add to the sense of isolation and vulnerability felt by our protagonist while highlighting the beauty and serenity of these majestic mountains. This artwork serves as a reminder of humanity's delicate position within nature's grandeur - where survival instincts are tested against formidable forces.
