The 6th (1st Royal Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot on exercise while stationed at Portsmouth, 1843 (oil on canvas)

5925046 The 6th (1st Royal Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot on exercise while stationed at Portsmouth, 1843 (oil on canvas) by Cunliffe, Daniel (fl.1843); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: The 6th (1st Royal Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot on exercise while stationed at Portsmouth, 1843.
Oil on canvas by Daniel Cunliffe (fl 1826-1855), 1843.
Unusual for the period, this painting shows a regiment on exercise, demonstrating the procedure for advancing in companies across a narrow bridge. This potentially dangerous manoeuvre when within range of enemy guns means some troops had to remain along the riverbank to give covering fire.
The colonel commanding the 6th Foot, Lieutenant-Colonel John Michel (centre, mounted), went on to have a brilliant military career, seeing active service in the Crimea (1854-1856), in India during the mutiny (1857-1859), and in the 2nd China War (1857-1860), before taking command of the British forces in North America during the Fenian troubles in the 1860s. He was made field marshal in 1885.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
The 6th (1st Royal Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot showcases their military prowess during an exercise while stationed at Portsmouth in 1843. This oil on canvas painting by Daniel Cunliffe captures a rare moment in history, as it depicts the regiment engaged in a training maneuver rather than a formal portrait. In this scene, the regiment demonstrates the intricate procedure for advancing in companies across a narrow bridge. The danger of enemy fire is palpable, requiring some troops to remain along the riverbank to provide covering fire. Lieutenant-Colonel John Michel, commanding officer of the 6th Foot and mounted at the center of attention, would go on to achieve great success throughout his military career. Michel's remarkable achievements include active service in significant conflicts such as the Crimean War, India during the mutiny period, and even participating in the 2nd China War. Later on, he took command of British forces during North America's Fenian troubles in the 1860s before being honored with field marshal status in 1885. This exceptional artwork not only offers us a glimpse into regimental training practices but also serves as a testament to Lieutenant-Colonel John Michel's extraordinary leadership and dedication to serving his country.
