EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th-century mezzotint print showcases the enigmatic Prince Rupert (1619 - 1682), also known as Rupert of the Rhine. As the third son of Elizabeth of Bohemia, who was famously referred to as the Winter Queen, and nephew of Charles I, Prince Rupert played a significant role in history. Renowned for his leadership skills, he fearlessly led the Royalist cavalry during the English Civil War. In this self-portrait, Prince Rupert's curly hair frames his regal face adorned with a stylish hat. His piercing gaze meets the viewer's eyes with confidence and intrigue. The vertical composition emphasizes his stature and noble presence. The illustration technique employed in this mezzotint demonstrates Prince Rupert's artistic talents beyond military prowess. Notably, he even improved upon the aquatint process itself – a testament to his innovative spirit. Dressed in historical clothing befitting his royal status, Prince Rupert leans on his elbows with one hand thoughtfully resting on his chin. This pose exudes both contemplation and authority. Displayed indoors against an unadorned backdrop, this portrait captures not only a moment frozen in time but also offers us insight into one young man's remarkable life within British royalty
