Max Valier, Austrian rocket pioneer

Max Valier (1895-1930), Austrian rocket pioneer. Valier was born in South Tyrol, and studied physics at the University of Innsbruck. After World War I, he became a science writer and wrote books on space travel. In 1927 he helped found the German spaceflight society (Verein fur Raumschiffahrt, VfR). In 1928 and 1929 he worked with Fritz von Opel on several rocket cars and aircraft. On 19 April 1930, Valier performed the first test drive of a rocket car with liquid propulsion, the Valier-Heylandt RAK 7. Less than a month later, Valier was killed when an alcohol- fuelled rocket exploded in his laboratory in Berlin

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the image of Max Valier, an Austrian rocket pioneer whose groundbreaking work in the early 20th century paved the way for advancements in space exploration. Born in South Tyrol and educated in physics at the University of Innsbruck, Valier dedicated his life to unraveling the mysteries of space travel. After World War I, Valier transitioned into a science writer and authored several books on this fascinating subject. In 1927, he co-founded the German spaceflight society (Verein fur Raumschiffahrt) alongside other visionaries. Collaborating with Fritz von Opel, Valier embarked on ambitious projects involving rocket cars and aircraft between 1928 and 1929. Tragically, on April 19th, 1930, Valier conducted a historic test drive of a liquid-propelled rocket car named Valier-Heylandt RAK 7. However, less than a month later, his life was cut short when an alcohol-fueled rocket exploded within his Berlin laboratory. Valier's death marked not only a personal tragedy but also highlighted the risks associated with pioneering technological advancements. Nevertheless, his contributions to rocketry and space flight remain significant milestones in scientific history. This monochrome portrait immortalizes Max Valier as a determined scientist and engineer who fearlessly pushed boundaries despite facing adversity along his journey. His legacy continues to inspire generations of researchers as they strive towards unlocking new frontiers beyond our planet's atmosphere.
