Jet power version of Buran, Russian space shuttle

Buran space shuttle training aircraft. This full-sized mock-up of the Russian Buran space shuttle was used to conduct approach and landing training for its pilots. It is powered by four jet engines (near the tail), and was flown 24 times between 1985 and 1988. Although this vehicle was aerodynamically identical to Buran, it had none of the pressure compartments and rocket motor systems of the real shuttle

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the jet power version of Buran, the Russian space shuttle. Serving as a training aircraft for its pilots, this full-sized mock-up was instrumental in conducting approach and landing exercises. Powered by four jet engines located near the tail, it took flight an impressive 24 times between 1985 and 1988. While sharing identical aerodynamics with the real Buran shuttle, this training vehicle lacked the pressure compartments and rocket motor systems found in its operational counterpart. Nonetheless, it played a vital role in preparing astronauts for manned spaceflight missions. The image captures the essence of Russia's ambitious space program during that era. The sleek design of the trainer version exudes both power and innovation. Its imposing presence against a clear blue sky symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of exploring outer space. As we admire this remarkable photograph from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of the dedication and determination required to push boundaries beyond Earth's atmosphere. It serves as a testament to Russia's significant contributions to space exploration and highlights their commitment to advancing scientific knowledge for future generations.
