Intravenous drip bag. An intravenous (IV) drip bag supported on a stand contains saline (0.9% sodium chloride solution). A tube (bottom right corner) carries saline into the bloodstream, usually through veins in the forearm. Saline is used to replace body fluids in dehydrated patients. An intravenous infusion, or drip, may also be used to give blood or plasma, to maintain body fluids in patients who are unable to drink or eat, and to administer certain drugs.
