Horned sea star

Horned sea star, or chocolate chip starfish (Protoreaster nodosus), on the seabed. This starfish inhabits the tropical Indo-Pacific region, where it feeds on carrion, algae, aquatic plants and detritus. Like most other starfish, it has amazing powers of regeneration. If an arm is severed it will grow back, and occasionally a severed arm will develop into a complete new starfish. It is a large starfish, and can reach a diameter of around 40 centimetres. Photographed off Malaysia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the vibrant and unique beauty of a Horned sea star, also known as a chocolate chip starfish (Protoreaster nodosus), gracefully resting on the sandy seabed. Found in the tropical Indo-Pacific region, this magnificent creature thrives on carrion, algae, aquatic plants, and detritus. What sets it apart from other marine species is its remarkable ability to regenerate. If one of its arms is severed, it will regrow effortlessly; sometimes even developing into an entirely new starfish. Measuring up to an impressive diameter of approximately 40 centimeters, this large starfish truly commands attention with its intricate horn-like protrusions adorning its body. The photograph was taken off the coast of Malaysia where these fascinating creatures flourish amidst the crystal-clear waters. As we delve into this mesmerizing image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of nature's incredible diversity and resilience. It serves as a reminder that even in the depths of our oceans lie extraordinary creatures capable of defying expectations through their astonishing abilities for regeneration and survival. Let us marvel at this awe-inspiring representation of life beneath the waves – a testament to both the fragility and strength found within our natural world.
