This terrain is produced by differential erosion of horizontal beds of soft, sedimentary rock, such as sandy clay, that is not protected by vegetation and subjected to occasional deluges of rain. The ravines become heavily scored by drainage channels as they develop. Badlands are found in the semi-arid interior of North America and in North Africa.
