EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Market Jew Street in Penzance, Cornwall during the 1920s. The view up the street showcases the bustling atmosphere and architectural beauty of this historic location. In the foreground stands a magnificent statue of Sir Humphrey Davy, a renowned figure who was born in Penzance and later became President of the Royal Society. The glass lantern slide is part of a lecture series titled "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots" presented by Major Arthur William Gill, an esteemed Cornishman and amateur photographer. Major Gill was widely recognized for his presentations featuring stills and cine film, which he showcased to various groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. What makes these slides truly remarkable is that they were taken with an ordinary camera but transformed into vivid color images through Major Gill's own hand-painting technique. This artistic touch adds depth and vibrancy to each slide, capturing not only the physical details but also evoking emotions associated with these picturesque locations. In this particular scene on Market Jew Street, one can observe horse-drawn carts and carriages passing by as cabmen attend to their duties. The presence of buckets suggests ongoing activities or perhaps preparations for market day. A small shelter provides respite from inclement weather for both drivers and pedestrians alike. This print serves as a testament to Major Gill's talent as both a photographer and artist while offering us a glimpse into life in Penz
