Irene, Bryan Pearce (1929-2007)

Oil on board, 1975. Bryan Pearce was born in St Ives in 1929 and suffered from the then unknown condition Phenylketonuria, which affects the normal development of the brain. Encouraged by his mother, the painter Mary Pearce, and then by other St Ives artists, he began drawing and painting in watercolours in 1953. His regular walks around St Ives, where he lived all his life, have been the inspiration for his subject matter, unconsciously recording the towns subtle changes. In this synthesis of imagination and reality, Pearce paints the world as he commands it; a sanctuary with an ever-present sun, bathing the streets and houses in the subtlest of colour harmonies. He worked slowly, but consistently, producing around twelve oil paintings a year. Often compared to Alfred Wallis, the late Peter Lanyon said of him: Because his sources are not seen with a passive eye, but are truly happenings, his painting is original. His particular experiences of his hometown were captured with unique clarity. Pearces artistic developments, his simple renditions of space, colour and light, evolve from a sophisticated understanding of composition. He had a career which spanned over fifty years, his paintings seem to evoke a serene sense of place, which seems at once personal yet archetypal. He is now recognised as one of the countrys foremost naive painters, through the re-examination of familiar views and landmarks, Pearce offers us his profound, extraordinary experience of St Ives

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Bryan Pearce's masterpiece, "Irene". Painted in 1975, this oil on board artwork reflects the extraordinary talent and unique perspective of an artist who overcame great challenges. Born in St Ives in 1929, Pearce lived with Phenylketonuria, a condition that hindered his brain's normal development. Supported by his mother Mary Pearce and fellow artists from St Ives, Bryan began exploring his artistic abilities in 1953 through watercolours. His regular walks around the town he called home became a wellspring of inspiration for his subject matter. Unbeknownst to him, these strolls unconsciously captured the subtle changes occurring within the town. In "Irene". Pearce masterfully combines imagination and reality to create a sanctuary under an ever-present sun. Bathing streets and houses with delicate color harmonies, he commands the world as he envisions it. Despite working slowly but consistently throughout his career—producing approximately twelve oil paintings per year—Pearce's artistry remains unparalleled. Often compared to Alfred Wallis, another renowned painter from St Ives, Bryan Pearce's work is hailed for its originality by late Peter Lanyon. Through simple renditions of space, color, and light—a testament to his sophisticated understanding of composition—Pearce captures the essence of his hometown with exceptional clarity. With over fifty years dedicated to honing his craft, Bryan Pearce has become one of Britain's foremost naive painters. By re-examining familiar views and landmarks within St Ives without commercial intent or mention thereof—the artist offers us profound insights into this serene place that feels both personal yet archetypal.
