A man crosses the street during thunderstorms in Havana
A man crosses the street near the Capitol building during thunderstorms in Havana October 14, 2010. A weakening Tropical Storm Paula moved ashore in Cuba on Thursday and neared the Cuban capital, where thunderstorms raked the city with winds and driving rain. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print captured by Desmond Boylan, we witness a man fearlessly crossing the street amidst a raging thunderstorm in Havana. The image was taken on October 14,2010, as Tropical Storm Paula swept through Cuba, bringing with it powerful winds and torrential rain. As the storm approached the Cuban capital, lightning illuminated the sky while gusts of wind whipped through the streets. The central focus of the photograph is a solitary figure navigating his way across an empty road near Havana's iconic Capitol building. Despite the hazardous conditions and heavy downpour, this brave individual remains undeterred, showcasing resilience in the face of nature's fury. Boylan's composition beautifully captures both tranquility and chaos simultaneously. The blurred silhouette of the man against a backdrop of hazy buildings creates an atmospheric scene that evokes a sense of awe and wonderment. The contrast between his small stature and the grandeur of architecture highlights humanity's insignificance when confronted with nature's might. This image serves as a reminder not only of our vulnerability to natural forces but also our ability to find beauty even in moments of adversity. It symbolizes courage and determination amidst challenging circumstances while showcasing Havana's unique blend of history, culture, and resilience.
